Young Dancers As Tough Competitors

Did you know that there are competitions for dancers, just as there are for athletes and other performers?  Thousands of dancers aged 9-19 compete annually in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). Winners are awarded scholarships and contracts. The entire process helps aspiring dancers make critical connections in the ballet world.

Experts from the country's top ballet institutions serve as judges. If you attended Augusta Ballet's presentation of American Ballet Theatre Studio Company on February 7th, you'll recognize Carlos Lopez, who is the company's ballet master and who led two master classes for local CSRA dancers the day before the performance. Carlos jetted from Augusta to San Francisco to serve as a judge in the YAGP semi-finals there. The final round will take place in New York City on April 15th.
