Dance Theatre of Harlem at The Bell

  • The Bell Auditorium

Augusta Ballet's first-ever New Traditions Dance Festival comes to a climactic conclusion in a lively performance by Dance Theatre of Harlem, a leading dance institution of unparalleled global acclaim.

Founded shortly after the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem is a multi-cultural institution showcasing African-American and other racially diverse artists who perform the most demanding repertory at the highest level of quality.

The performance will consist of four eclectic pieces from the company's ballet-based contemporary repertoire, including one featuring the music of the Augusta’s own, legendary James Brown.

Return

Choreographed by Robert Garland for Dance Theatre of Harlem's 30th anniversary and staged for 12 dancers to songs performed by James Brown and Aretha Franklin, Return is "... a witty fusion of ballet technique and street gait whose irony toward rhythm-and- blues had the audience in stitches."
